Kylian Mbappe Takes Legal Action Against PSG Over Unpaid €100 Million

Earlier this month, Real Madrid announced they had reached an agreement to sign Kylian Mbappe once his contract with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) expires at the end of June.

PSG had been aware of Mbappe’s intention to leave the club this summer and had prepared for his departure by including various clauses in his contract. Through these contractual provisions, PSG expects to save up to €200 million following his exit, thanks to a complex legal arrangement.
However, according to a report by L’Equipe in May, Mbappe was still negotiating the terms of his departure, as he claimed PSG owed him €80 million in wages and bonuses. Recent updates from L’Equipe now indicate that this amount has increased to €100 million, as Mbappe has not received his salary for the final month of his contract. Consequently, Mbappe has filed a claim with the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP), the governing body of French club football.

Mbappe’s claim is based on article 259 of the LFP’s charter, which mandates that “salaries must be paid by the clubs to the players under contract no later than the last day of each month, under the conditions of common law.” While discussions between PSG and Mbappe are ongoing, the player has indicated he may pursue legal action if the issue is not resolved to his satisfaction before June 30, the official end date of his contract with PSG.

When approached for comment by L’Equipe, PSG stated briefly that “negotiations are continuing” with Mbappe.

Currently, Mbappe is participating in Euro 2024 as the captain of the French national team. He missed their second group stage match—a 0-0 draw with the Netherlands—after sustaining a broken nose during France’s 1-0 victory against Austria.
