Watch video: Real Madrid Star Bellingham Explains Controversial Gesture After Goal vs Slovakia

Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham has moved to clarify a situation that arose on Sunday evening, after facing scrutiny for a gesture directed towards the sidelines during England’s match against Slovakia.

Midfielder Bellingham is fresh off a memorable night on the continent. With England trailing and on the brink of a shock Euro 2024 exit at the hands of Slovakia, the 21-year-old produced a moment of individual brilliance. Five minutes into injury time, Bellingham executed a stunning overhead kick into the bottom corner, paving the way for Harry Kane to score an extra-time winner, thus propelling Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions into the quarter-finals.

However, post-match, Bellingham’s name made headlines for less positive reasons due to a gesture he made after scoring the equalizer. The Real Madrid star was seen putting his hand to his face and then his groin area, leading to immediate speculation that it was an insult directed at the Slovakian bench.

This theory has since been debunked. Taking to his official X account shortly after the incident, Bellingham shared footage of the moment and clarified the situation with the following caption:

“An inside joke gesture towards some close friends who were at the game. Nothing but respect for how that Slovakia team played tonight.”
